Zambia Doing Its Part to Restore Mother Earth
Issue of protecting mother earth cannot be over emphasized just as we get inspiration from Indian & Global icon swami Vivekananda .
Globally we have seen human induced environmental degradation ranging from air pollution, improper waste management , deforestation , industrialization and urbanization to illegal wildlife trafficking leading to climatic extreme events from floods , heat waves , drought to endangering species and deterioration of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems .
We all note that these climate crises are threatening the availability of food, water livelihood of the people species and ecosystem all across the world.
I am personally happy with the theme for Earth day 2021 which is “Restore our earth “.
We must see scientists , nonprofit , business , government and everyday citizens worldwide come together to look at natural system processes and emerging green technologies to restore the worlds ecosystems and forests , conserve and rebuild soils , improve farming practices , restore wildlife populations and rid the worlds water bodies of plastics .
All countries across the world need to join efforts in fighting solutions towards attaining a resilient planet.
Zambia is working with partners ranging from NGOs , CSOs , youth groups , schools universities , non-profits , faith based organizations women’s groups , conservation /environmental organizations , to private sectors including business and ultimately the government bodies to ensure a safe mother earth .
Zambia plays particular interest in forests as they are multifunctional resources.
Forests provide firewood, food, they regulate the water and carbon
Cycles, they provide oxygen and they protect the biodiversity.
Since it is impossible to quantify economically the value of the ecosystem services, forests in most parts of the world are depleted.
More than 90 % of the deforestation at global level happens in the tropical region.
The definition of the economical value of the forest should be the ideal answer to this problem , but it is necessary to find out a quick solution for the forest degradation .
Due to the charcoal production, Zambia is one of the most important countries at global level for deforestation.
At the same time, it can provide the solution based on alternative source of energy.
The use of briquettes, blocks made by sawdust obtained by the wood production scraps, can reduce the deforestation caused by the production and the use of charcoal in developing countries.
Zambia continues with research on existing literature , interviews of experts at the Zambian forestry department , meteorological department , and the ministry of health of Zambia , as well as interview in the field to find new answers towards protecting mother earth .
The interaction with the institution and local population has been vital in identifying the possible solutions to contrast the forest loss in Zambia.
The country, Zambia , is a signatory to international protocols and treaties on the protection of forests , water bodies , wildlife and ozone layer including the Minamata Convention on mercury .
Zambia welcomes global efforts to a first solution to reduce the rate of deforestation and climate change effects.
